How We Met
We met the old fashioned way… on a dating app. After deciding she never wanted to endure LA traffic again for a man, Lauren set her search radius to one mile. Nick happened to drive through and it was a match! But he was on his way to the airport. Back home to Massachusetts on Winter break from his Masters program at USC. For a month. Basically an eternity. Nick said he’d reach out when he got back. Lauren laughed. “See you never.”
But Nick did reach out. The moment he got back. So they met at Rock & Reilly’s Pub on the USC campus in January of 2020. They shared a few drinks, some fried pickles, and real conversation. Everything was going great… until the end of the date when Nick asked Lauren to grab a milkshake with him down the street. She said yes, but he told her he was “just being polite.” There are many theories on why he said this (nerves, sudden stomach pain, miscommunication?) But Lauren now uses it to get free milkshakes whenever she wants.
What followed was a series of hilariously unfortunate dates. Including a rain check for bowling on Hollywood Blvd the night the Covid lock down started. The car battery dying during a drive in movie. And leaving Korean BBQ because of a loud, broken fire alarm.
But through it all, Lauren realized there isn’t anyone else she would rather have a terrible time with. Nick asked Lauren to be his girlfriend during a late night computer gaming session. Over the next five years they moved into their DTLA apartment together with their cat. Lauren quit her job, and they made it through her masters program at AFI together. They adopted a second cat, Nick became a full time writer, and in December of 2024 Nick proposed.
Nick used his first paycheck as a horror writer to buy Lauren the perfect ring (that they picked out together). Then during Christmas break 2024, Nick snuck the ring into their luggage as they ventured to see Lauren’s family up in Seattle. He brought her to a picturesque seaside bluff on the beautiful Whidbey island. A photographer herself, Lauren quickly spotted Nick’s hidden photographer. And in true Nick and Lauren fashion, freezing rain began to fall as she said yes. But it was perfect, and in the spot they filmed one of their favorite horror movies, The Ring.
So even as the world -and their dates- crumble around them, Nick and Lauren remain each other’s strong foundations. Grounding each other.
